Due to unpredictable weather affecting flights during winter and spring, we highly recommend having these leeway days built into your trip to avoid mishaps. If a flight is delayed due to weather, we easily adapt your itinerary to make the best of any situation. For this trip we would recommend arriving in Mongolia 2 nights before the flight to Bayan-Ulgii, and any international travel departing Mongolia at least 2 nights after the flight from Khovd to Ulaanbaatar. WEATHER Mongolia is located in the Northern Hemisphere temperate zone. Situated at an average altitude of 1500 m above the sea level separated from the oceans, surrounded by high mountains that block the wet winds, Mongolia has an extreme continental climate. The winter continues long with cold temperature whereas summer is hot and not so long. Winter lasts from November to late April, Spring May through June. Summer lasts from July through to September. The average summer temperature is +20°C (+65F) . Winter is -20°C (-13°F) . The wind is 1.5-4.5m/s. The average rainfall 200-220 mm. In Mongolia there are 250 sunny days a year, often with clear cloudless skies. This is why Mongolia is known as the country of "Blue Skies". MONEY The local currency is Mongolian Tugrik, and all exchanges are carried out in local currency (MNT). The currency cannpt be purchased outside of Mongolia. We operate our trips to be as cash free as possible so you will only need a small amount of cash for purchasing souvenirs from local crafts people. US dollar and other currency are not accepted in shops, restaurants etc. You can exchange money in Ulaanbaatar at any bank or in a Exchange Centre. Outside of Ulaanbaatar there are limited ATM facilities and banks, so please have your money prepared in cash before you leave the city. In Ulaanbaatar, most shops will accept credit cards. In the countryside, shops rarely accept international credit card. LANGUAGE The main language used in Mongolia is Mongolian. Some areas in Western Mongolia speak Kazakh and in Northern Mongolia, Tuvan. Younger generations have a basic grasp of English, but the older generations, over 50, tend to know Russian. The Lonely Planet Phrase Book for Mongolian is a good book to have handy. Mongolian people will always appreciate your efforts to speak a few words to them, even if it is only "hello" (sain bain uu) and "goodbye" (bayartai).

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS US citizens do not need a visa to visit Mongolia for under 90 days. For other nationalities, please check with us. We can assist in your visa application. You will need a current passport, valid for longer than 6 months after your travel dates. You must keep this with you at all times. HEALTH AND SAFETY A full COVID-19 vaccine (2 doses) is required for entry into Mongolia from 1st June 2021. Any vaccine approved by the WHO for emergency use is accepted, and a certificate of vaccination is required in order to board your flight to Mongolia. Masks are required by law to be worn indoors in Mongolia at this time. All our guides, drivers, chefs and support staff have been vaccinated against COVID-19. We follow the ADVENTURE TRAVEL COVID-19 HEALTH AND SAFETY GUIDELINES complied by the ATTA as far as possible. IMMUNIZATIONS Routine vaccinations are essential (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis, Measles, Mumps, Rubella and Polio, Rotavirus). Please make sure they are up-to-date. In addition we recommend: Hepatitis A Hepatitis B Typhoid Rabies Tick Born Encephalitis (for travellers visiting remote areas in Northern Mongolia and Eastern Mongolia between June and September) INSURANCE We require our International Travellers to have travel and medical insurance.
