Day 1

place Arrival to Madrid and orientation

Welcome to Madrid! To welcome you into this lively city, your private taxi first accompanies you to the hotel. Or for those arriving earlier by car, you’ll have an option to kick start the tour and dive right in. Walk about the center and gather your first impressions of the grand streets and bright architecture. You’ll soon discover a wonderful assortment of elegant boulevards, illustrious museums, royal palaces, manicured parks, and trendy eateries. Madrid's center is a collection of diverse barrios, each boasting a distinct charm and laying claim to architectural curiosity, including the 17th century Plaza Mayor and the enormous Royal Palace. We recommend a stroll down Gran Via, the city’s most famous "calle". Find your way to Puerta del Sol - the so-called ‘Heart of Spain’ and home to the famous Bear and Strawberry Tree statue, a symbol of the city.

This marvelous mix has enriched the city with highly unique historical and architectural offerings. Located atop a gorge above the Tagus river, this is a must for culture lovers who will revel in the vaulted mosques, Sephardic synagogues, and Gothic cathedrals, as well as the artworks of the famous El Greco with whom the city is synonymous. After having returned to Madrid, use the afternoon to soak up the culture with many diverse neighborhoods to visit, sights to see, and local products to purchase. Gijon is a cozy city with a touch of historic buildings and Roman ruins. This afternoon brings you two short excursion opportunities, to traditionally Spanish towns. The medieval and grand Oviedo, and the colorfully constructed Aviles. Both lend a view into the architecture of Asturian towns and villages, are within short driving distance, and are definitely worth a visit.
