Day 1: Tokyo - Hakone, Japan
Today, you will make your way from central Tokyo into the beautiful mountains of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park using your transport pass.
The Journey: Head to Odakyu Shinjuku Station in Tokyo. Scan your 3-Day Pass at the ticket gates to board the Odakyu Odawara Line Express train down to Odawara Station. From there, smoothly transfer to the local Hakone Tozan Railway to reach Hakone-Yumoto Station, the main gateway to the valley.
Optional Route Upgrade: If you prefer a faster, direct ride without changing trains, you can independently purchase a seat upgrade for the Limited Express Romancecar at Shinjuku Station for an additional local surcharge (approx. 1,200 yen per person).
Optional Afternoon Suggestions: Once you arrive, you can activate your pass on the local network. Consider taking a scenic ride on the Hakone Tozan Bus over the mountains to the shores of Lake Ashi, or head straight to your accommodation to drop off your luggage and settle into mountain time.
Overnight: Hakone
Day 2: Hakone, Japan
Savor breakfast at your accommodation before setting out on a completely independent day of exploration. Your transport pass gives you full flexibility to experience the classic Hakone Round-Course loop or mix and match the attractions that interest you most.
Optional Sightseeing Suggestions:
Owakudani Volcanic Valley: Ride the panoramic Hakone Ropeway (the world’s second-longest cable car) over the mountain ridge into a dramatic, active volcanic zone filled with steaming sulfur vents. Here, you can try a traditional Kuro-tamago—a black hard-boiled egg cooked in the sulfur waters, which local lore claims adds 7 years to your life!
Lake Ashi Sightseeing Cruise: Head down to the water and board a majestic, colorful pirate ship for a scenic cruise across Lake Ashinoko, a historic caldera lake formed nearly 3,000 years ago. On a clear day, the lake offers breathtaking views of Mount Fuji.
The Switchback Mountain Train: Ride the historic Hakone Tozan Railway, which zig-zags its way up and down steep hillsides, lush valleys, and scenic bridges.
Hakone Checkpoint Museum: Walk through the carefully reconstructed Edo-period checkpoint situated right on an original portion of the Old Tokaido Highway.
Onsen Relaxation: Take a dip in one of the valley's world-famous natural hot spring baths (onsens), some of which offer unique local refreshments.
Overnight: Hakone
Meals: Breakfast
Day 3: Hakone - Tokyo, Japan
Enjoy your final morning in the fresh mountain air. You have the morning and afternoon free to continue exploring hidden corners of Hakone before heading back to the metropolis.
Optional Morning Suggestions: Consider taking a local bus down to the lakeside to wander through the towering, centuries-old Ancient Cedar Avenue, or walk along the forested path to see the iconic red torii gate of Hakone Shrine standing beautifully directly in the lake waters. You can also stop by Hakone-Yumoto Station for lunch and independent souvenir shopping.
The Return Journey: Whenever you are ready to head back, make your way to Hakone-Yumoto or Odawara Station. Use your 3-Day Pass to board the return Odakyu Line Express train back to Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, concluding your independent mountain getaway.
