Our expert local guide will take us back in time to the Portuguese discovery of Brazil and trace the development of Paraty through the sugar, gold, and coffee economic booms. The history of Paraty is, after all, the history of Brazil. Beautiful colonial architecture, street design ahead of its time, exiled Portuguese royalty, and the dark past of the slave trade – these are just some of the ingredients that make up Paraty’s rich and colorful history from the past to the present day. The Gold Trail takes us back in time along the stone road that was built by African slaves in the 18th Century to move gold and precious stones from Brazil’s interior to ships bound for Portugal. After walking on the trail through the rainforest we stop at waterfalls to swim and then finish the tour at a cachaça distillery that uses traditional techniques to produce this uniquely Brazilian spirit.
