Private guided tour of Lisbon
This morning, our guide will meet you at your hotel for a private guided tour of Lisbon. First, you will head to Bélem. Here you will visit two of the ‘7 Wonders of Portugal’ that have dominated this landscape for 500 years. You will start with the Belém Tower, a 16th-century fortification which protected Lisbon from incoming raids along the Tagus River. It was also what marked the beginning of voyages for the sailors and the last sight of land. It became UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, along Jeronimos Monastery, which will be your next landmark. Jeronimos Monastery is the most impressive symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the Age of Discovery. King Manuel I built it in 1502 on the site of a hermitage founded by Prince Henry the Navigator, where Vasco da Gama and his crew spent their last night in Portugal in prayer before leaving for India. It was built to commemorate Vasco Da Gama's voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success, and it is one of the greatest examples of the local Manueline architecture. Of course, you can't leave Belém neighborhood without visiting the original place for the popular Pasteis de Nata and taste at least one of them! On return to Lisbon city center, together with our guide, you will discover the beauty of Lisbon's old quarter. You will walk around one of the oldest and quaintest neighborhoods: Alfama. A labyrinth of narrow cobbled colorful streets between the São Jorge Castle and the Tagus river, from where you will enjoy captivating views of the city and the river, as well as get immersed into the charm of the traditional lifestyle. Alfama survived the 1755 earthquake, and to walk through this old-fashioned residential neighborhood is now a step back in time. It's a village within a city still made up of narrow streets, tiny squares, churches, and whitewashed houses with tile panels and wrought-iron balconies adorned with pots of flowers, drying laundry, and caged birds.
