Day 1: Arrival in Mombasa | Scenic rail journey from Nairobi
Depart Nairobi aboard the SGR Madaraka Express for the scenic rail journey to Mombasa Terminus. This train ride forms the main transfer of the day and begins your four-day coastal extension, with the route taking you directly from Nairobi to Mombasa.
When you arrive at Mombasa Terminus, you will be met for your onward transfer. After completing the arrival journey and transfer, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, with no additional scheduled activities. Dinner is included this evening.

Day 2: Market and Swahili Cooking | Select ingredients and prepare traditional coastal dishes
After breakfast, join a short guided visit to a local market in Mombasa. Experience the rhythm of daily coastal life as you move through the market and interact directly with local vendors. With your guide, select a few fresh ingredients for use later during the cooking session.
In the afternoon, proceed to the Swahili cooking experience. Use the selected ingredients to prepare a selection of traditional coastal dishes influenced by the region’s rich cultural heritage, then enjoy what you have prepared. Dinner is included later in the day.
Swahili culture on Kenya’s coast developed through interactions between local communities and long-distance traders.

Day 3: Mombasa Heritage and Street Food | Half-day city tour with evening flavors
After breakfast, set out on a half-day exploration of Mombasa for a final glimpse of the city’s history and coastal character. Visit Fort Jesus, walk through Mombasa Old Town, continue to Mama Ngina Waterfront and Mombasa Tusks, also known as the Elephant Tusks, and explore the surrounding areas.
Lunch will be served at a local Swahili restaurant. Return in the early afternoon for leisure and relaxation before stepping out again for a curated evening street food experience. Discover the vibrant flavors and atmosphere of Mombasa’s local food scene. Dinner is also included.
Built by the Portuguese from 1593 to 1596, Fort Jesus was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011.

Day 4: Return to Nairobi | Transfer to Mombasa SGR station
After breakfast, transfer to Mombasa SGR station for your return train to Nairobi. The station transfer and rail journey form the day’s main travel arrangements, taking you away from Mombasa and back to the trip’s original starting point in Nairobi.
On arrival in Nairobi, proceed with your onward plans. This marks the end of the four-day coastal extension, with the final travel sequence moving from breakfast in Mombasa to the station transfer, the return train journey, and your onward plans after reaching Nairobi.
The Kiswahili word “madaraka” means authority or self-governance.
