Day 1

place Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli | First Game Drive on Open Plains

Depart Nairobi in the morning and drive south to Amboseli National Park, following the day’s route toward one of Kenya’s best-known wildlife areas. Arrive in time for lunch, with the transfer setting up a smooth start before your afternoon safari activity.

In the afternoon, head out on your first game drive across Amboseli’s open plains. The park is known for large elephant herds and sweeping views of Mount Kilimanjaro, giving you a strong introduction to the landscape, wildlife, and photography opportunities that define this part of Kenya.

Amboseli National Park lies in southern Kenya near the Tanzania border, with Mount Kilimanjaro forming one of its most recognizable backdrops.

Spend the day exploring Amboseli National Park with game drives scheduled in both the morning and afternoon. This pacing gives you two separate opportunities to experience the park’s open landscapes and observe wildlife activity across different parts of the day.

Amboseli’s swamps and savanna attract abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, and diverse birdlife. When conditions are clear, views of Mount Kilimanjaro create an exceptional backdrop for photography throughout the safari experience.

Amboseli National Park is widely associated with elephant viewing, and its wetland areas are a key part of the park’s wildlife habitat.

This first encounter may include traditional dances and cultural performances, a visit to local basket weavers and artisans, and participation in a symbolic tree planting activity that contributes to conservation efforts. In the evening, head out for a scenic sundowner with vast landscapes, sunset views, and light snacks.

Symbolic tree planting is often used in community conservation settings to connect environmental stewardship with local participation.

Interact with community conservation initiatives before lunch during the day. In the afternoon, visit the Kasigau historical site to learn about First World War events in the region, particularly encounters between British and German forces and how they shaped the local community and its history. Return in the evening for relaxation.

The First World War’s East Africa campaign involved British Empire soldiers fighting German forces across East Africa from 1914 to 1918.

On arrival at the Mombasa Terminus, you are met for your onward transfer into the city. After completing the transfer, enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, giving you unstructured time following the rail journey and arrival on the coast.

In the afternoon, continue to a Swahili cooking experience. Prepare and enjoy a selection of traditional coastal dishes influenced by the region’s rich cultural heritage, connecting the morning’s market interaction with a hands-on introduction to Mombasa’s food traditions.

Swahili cuisine on Kenya’s coast is closely tied to long-standing coastal trade, which helped shape its use of spices and layered flavors.
