Day 3: Lake Titicaca - La Paz, Peru
Visit local communities (B/L)
After breakfast on board, continue enjoying the overwhelming panorama of Lake Titicaca and head towards the Andean communities of Pariti, Kalauta and Patapatani located on the shores of the smaller portion of the Lake known as “Wiñay Marca”. First we will visit Pariti Island. We'll board a small boat to access this island where we visit a typical local house that which will introduce you to the real livelihood of aymara people in the highlands. In this same island, local people started finding various ceramic pieces during their daily activities (digging for constructions, plowing to cultivate their products, etc.). This awoke curiosity among the villagers and archaeologists as well, so archaeological diggings started, and numerous pieces of fine ceramics dated to Tiwanaku culture were found. The ones that stand out are figures of wildlife such as tigers, monkeys, etc. which leads to think that Pariti was a ceremonial site visited by peoples from beyond the Andes. All these objects are currently on display at the Pariti Museum, which is part of the itinerary. Continue towards Kalauta on a typical fishing barge - a unique experience where rowing among the totorales (reed plants) offers a special sense of peace and mysticism unique to this pristine portion of the lake. In Kalauta, you can visit a great deal of funeral towers. Kalauta was once an ancient stone town and the largest prehispanic necropolis. We return in the same boats to board the Catamaran. Here you will enjoy a snack. Then, the navigation continues towards Pata Patani, we will reach the community in small boats where the community welcomes tourists at the port by handing them garlands made of flowers and inviting them to participate in their dances. This community is very rooted to ancient traditions and still makes a livelihood of fishing. A visit to the Pata Patani Museum is also in the itinerary; this museum shelters the oldest best-preserved Andean mummy called Tani. Afterwards, return to the catamaran to enjoy buffet lunch on board while sailing in the Titicaca Lake continues. End with a land transfer to La Paz.
