More Exploration of Burgundy and its Countryside
Morning at leisure. Early afternoon, pick up by your guide and his or her vehicle at your accommodation. Historic tour of Abbaye de Fontenay, Semur en Auxois and Flavigny sur Ozerain (private tour / approx 5 hours): Abbaye de Fontenay: Fontenay Abbey in Burgundy was founded in 1118 by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, a leading French saint, and is the oldest preserved Cistercian abbey in the world. Recognized as a French historic monument in 1862, it was declared World Heritage by Unesco in 1981. After the French revolution, which led to the departure of the monks, it was converted to an industrial use which preserved all the buildings of the Romanesque period: the Abbey Church, the Dormitory, Cloister, Chapter Room, the Common Room, and the Forge. The Abbey is decorated with a landscaped park which was listed in 2004 as "Remarkable Garden" by the National Council of Parks and Gardens. Located in northern Burgundy, it is nestled in a fully preserved valley which extends over 1,200 hectares. Semur en Auxois: Six majestic gates, together with a barbican gate, linked the Notre-Dame area to the different neighborhoods of the city. The Fontaignotte gate, protected by a tower, linked the neighborhoods located on the plateau’s border to the neighborhoods on the Armançon’s banks. Dominating the Fourneau steps, the Cycognier gate was the only passage for those who came from the Pertuisot area and wished to gain access to the keep. In the opposite direction, another similar gate, the gate de la Vierge, was located near the Orle d’Or tower. Finally, the Carême Prenant gate, led to the neighborhood situated on the plateau dominating the Armançon.
