Day 1

place Arrival to Mauritius and onward flight to Rodrigues Island

On arrival on the Island you will be welcomed by a representative holding a personalized sign board. Private air-conditioned to your hotel or authentic lodge. et in the southern part of the Indian Ocean, just some 600 km away from Mauritius, Rodrigues Island is among one of the rarest place you could seek for. Protectively kept away from the mainstream travel destinations, this pristine island is very well known for its authentic culture, people and unspoilt places where serenity reign over. It is often claimed that Rodrigues Island was first discovered by Arab navigators in the 10th century, and is featured on a 12th century map by an Arab geographer Ash-Sharif al Idrisi. However, in 1528, it was Don Diégo Rodriguez, a Portuguese navigator, which also happens to be the first European to discover the uninhabited island. It was from him that the island was named after. Far from the typical tourist destination, Rodrigues offers something unique and authentic, which can only be understood once you pay a visit. Ideal for those seeking to unwind and rejuvenate in an undisturbed environment, away from the completely chaotic cities and pollutions, Rodrigues Island offers you a completely different experience.

At the top you will enjoy a panoramic view of the sea at a 360 degree picturesque angle. You will then discover Roche Bon Dieu, which takes its name from a Rodrigues legend. That indeed looks like a rock fell from the sky... It is also said that the wishes of those who touch it come true... Thereafter, you will stop on the most beautiful beaches on the island such as Pointe Cotton, Fumier, Anse Ali and Anse Saint Francois, well-known for their white sand and beautiful sceneries. Finally you will walk for about 45 minutes from Saint Francois to Trou d’Argent, known for its famous legend of hidden treasure and also the proximity of the barrier coralline. You will have the opportunity to snorkel. Have lunch in a local table d'hôtes and from there proceed to the zip line spot. Facing the south coast with breathtaking views of the lagoon, the zip line adventure will take you across 3 lush green valleys amidst flying Paille-en-Queues and golden bats. Discover the beauty of the island suspended at a thrilling height of more than 100 metres above trees and waterfalls. You would not want to miss it! Transfer back to your accommodation.

place Robinson Crusoe Tour

Departure with your driver-guide for a private full day in the infinite lagoon. From Baie du Nord, a boat will take you to this paradise island located 4 km west of Rodrigues. You will spend a full day on one of the most beautiful beaches of the island. For lunch, you will savor freshly cooked Rodrigues specialties. You will discover a natural reserve where thousands of sea birds have sought shelter and enjoy the fresh waters of the blue lagoon. Classified "nature reserve", a visit to this island is strictly controlled by the state and requires a permit which is preserved cleverly, the island cannot be visited completely, because one third of its surface is inaccessible to the public. Its neighboring island, Ile aux Sables, home to thousands of birds, is in turn completely off limits. Furthermore fishing around the islands is not allowed to preserve food resources of the occupants who eat on squid and small fish. Two guards, permanently on the island, monitor the reserve. With this area so controlled, the island remains a breeding site for the species, evidence of successful cohabitation between birds and tourists! After the tour transfer back to the hotel.

Day 4

place Hike Graviers to St. Francois

Rodrigues is an island that needs to be discovered on foot, whether it is an inland trip or a trip along the edge of the lagoon. Not only is it great exercise, it’s also a marvelous way to explore. The charms and secrets of the island will gradually unfold themselves while you roam through the numerous paths that criss-cross the island. Trekking or even walking represents a good opportunity to meet the local people, to share some small talk and to discover the island life. For the nature lovers you can observe the local flora and fauna – insects, birds, bats, endemic plants – or simply come across cows, goats, pigs, and sheep enjoying their freedom. Rodrigues can be easily explored with or without a guide and since the Island is small and it is literally impossible to get lost. One can start off on foot and then decide to take a bus or even a boat to continue the route!! The locals are very keen to help and will always be able to indicate the paths “less taken”. A variety of guided hikes are available, some departing directly from Bakwa Lodge. It is important to note that with the help of the guide you can formulate your own hike depending on your interests and your goals – and you may benefit from their local knowledge. Most hikes are between 2 and 4 hours and the difficulty level varies form “Easy” to “Moderate”. The recommended gear for hiking in Rodrigues is cool clothing, hats or caps, tennis or hiking shoes. Take along water and sun screen. It is advisable to bring along a swimming suit (bathing suit) for a cooling plunge in the sea if the hike follows the coast line. Avoid hiking in the midday sun; an early morning departure is best when the light and the views are stunning. “It’s the early bird that gets the worm!”
