Day 1

place Day 1: Hanoi to Sapa | Trekking the Muong Hoa Valley

In the evening before your first full day, you meet at your hotel in Hanoi at 8:30 PM for a transfer to Tran Quy Cap train station. You board the night train at 9:40 PM, sharing an air-conditioned soft sleeper cabin for the journey north to Lao Cai town.

Arriving at Lao Cai station around 6:30 AM, you are greeted by a driver and transferred to Sapa. Breakfast is served at a Hmong hotel upon arrival. After breakfast, you begin a challenging trek through the Muong Hoa valley, considered one of the most beautiful in Vietnam. The route takes you over winding streams, past layers of rice terraces, and through Hmong villages. Along the way, you learn about the local region, its culture, and agricultural methods.

After completing the trek, you are welcomed by your host. A local Hmong woman introduces you to batik, a traditional craft where patterns are made with beeswax and dyed in indigo. You spend the evening connecting with the family, sharing dinner, and staying overnight at their home.

Trekking distance for the day is 13 kilometers, estimated at six hours, with a trail difficulty rating of 4 out of 5.

The Muong Hoa valley is renowned for its dramatic rice terraces and is home to several ethnic minority communities who have cultivated these landscapes for generations.

Lunch is enjoyed at a Hmong restaurant that overlooks the river and rice terraces.

Following lunch, you are driven back to Sapa. Here, you have free time for shopping, enjoying coffee, and taking a shower at a Hmong hotel. Later in the day, a van transfers you to Lao Cai station to board the night train returning to Hanoi.

At around 8:00 AM, you depart Hanoi in a shared van headed for Ha Long Bay. Arrival at the port is scheduled for approximately 12:30 PM. Once at the port, you board your boat and settle into your cabin before attending a trip briefing. The boat sets course for Bai Tu Long Bay, where you can admire the unique limestone formations from the water.

During the cruise, you visit Thien Canh Son cave. Afterward, you have the option to relax on a secluded island beach or explore the bay by kayak. Later in the afternoon, you return to the boat in time to watch the sunset from the top deck. The day concludes with a seafood dinner featuring fresh ingredients from the bay.
