Bogotá City Tour - La Candelaria Historic District
Today, you will explore the Colombian capital of Bogotá during a walking tour with an English-speaking guide. The area of modern Bogotá was first populated by indigenous groups who migrated from Mesoamerica. Among these groups were the Muiscas who settled in what are now the neighborhoods of Cundinamarca and Boyacá. With the arrival of the Spanish, the area became a major settlement, founded by Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada. The city later became the capital of the Spanish provinces and the seat of the Viceroyalty of New Granada. When independence came, Bogotá became the capital of Gran Colombia and later the capital of the Republic of Colombia. Located at 2,600 meters above sea level, Bogotá is a city of over 8 million inhabitants. Bogotá has 2 different sectors for tourism. The first is the old Candelaria Historic District, scattered with traditional colonial houses and cobblestoned streets. The second sector and, by contrast, the north of the city boasts modernity and innovation. Tourists will find government buildings, as well as a variety of trendy shops, restaurants and bars. Bogotá's historic city center "La Candelaria" with its impressive churches, the State Palace and the "Plaza Bolívar" will be explored with the company of your guide explaining each building’s history in detail. Furthermore, you can visit the world-famous gold museum "Museo del Oro", the Emerald Museum and the museum of the famous Colombian artist Botero. Bogotá is an inspiring city that offers something new every day. In 2010, the capital of Colombia was chosen as a "Must See" destination by the prestigious New York Times newspaper. You can discover a city that offers a wide range of opportunities in the fields of art, culture, recreation, sports and science. *Note: Gold Museum is closed on Mondays, the Emerald Museum on Sundays and the Botero Museum on Tuesdays.

Bogota- Zipaquira- Guatavita- Bogota
You will have a full day private transport from Bogotá to Guatavita, Zipaquirá and then back to Bogotá. Zipaquirá is a historical village in the Bogotá Savanna, famous because the first wonder of Colombia is located there: the Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral. This spot has a geological background that goes back millions of years. Pre-Columbian indigenous communities inhabited the region before the Spanish colonization and used the resources of the salt mines to trade with other Native American communities. With the arrival of the Spanish Empire, salt production was industrialized until the establishment of the Republic. The Catholic religion had a relevant influence on the country's history, so during the tour you will know why a salt mine ended up being an impressive contemporary subterranean cathedral. It all began with the miners' adoration of the Virgin of Guasá, protector of the miners, to whom a small altar was constructed that later became a religious project of great magnitude. You will pass through different religious stations until you reach the main nave, 180 meters below the ground. Let yourself be amazed by the greatest religious construction in the country! The spectacular Guatavita Lagoon is located close to Bogotá, approximately 1.5 hours by car. In the Colombian history and culture this place is considered one of the most important because it is a direct reference of the El Dorado Legend, and a sacred place for the indigenous community "Muisca" that has inhabited this territory for hundreds of years. On the trip, you will discover the history of the ancestral indigenous rituals that took place in the lake and the reason why it was a place of interest throughout the colonial era. The Spaniards were the first to arrive in the region, and the knowledge of the ancestral offerings started a gold fever, which made the "El Dorado Legend" famous.
