In the morning, depart from El Calafate and set out toward the renowned Torres del Paine National Park, crossing from Argentina into Chile. As you travel, the landscape shifts from Argentina’s steppe to Chile’s diverse scenery, revealing the vast Patagonian steppe shaped by wind and aridity and stretches of the Magellanic deciduous forest. Along the route, keep an eye out for the Patagonian guanaco, a South American camelid related to the llama, and the endemic lesser Rhea (ñandu), a flightless bird akin to the African ostrich. When you arrive inside Torres del Paine National Park, a UNESCO biosphere reserve encompassing over 242,000 hectares, the panorama becomes truly unforgettable—dozens of lakes filled with marine birds, jagged granite peaks, turquoise lakes, rushing waterfalls, and ice-covered mountain tops fill your view. For your first exploration within the park, enjoy a 15-minute walk to the thundering Salto Grande Waterfall, which connects Nordenskjold and Pehoe Lakes. Spend the rest of the day at leisure, choosing how to discover even more of the park’s wonders before settling in for the night at Hosteria Pehoe.
Torres del Paine was created as a national park in 1959 and stands today as one of South America’s most breathtaking natural treasures.
