Matera, Basilicata's jewel, may be the world's third-longest continuously inhabited human settlement. Natural caves in the tufa limestone, exposed as the Gravina cut its gorge, attracted the first inhabitants perhaps 7000 years ago. More elaborate structures were built atop them. Today, looking across the gorge to Matera’s huddled sassi (cave dwellings) it seems you've been transported back to the ancient Holy Land. In 1993 the town was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, for being "the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem".

The city also has a historical center that from the heart of Galatina opens its streets of basolato towards squares, courtyards and palaces that tell the story of an active Salento, where the activities of the peasants were intertwined with the lives of noblewomen and noblemen. A must for anyone in Galatina is a visit to the oldest pastry shop in the city, the same pastry shop where the famous "Pasticciotto" was born in 1740 and where still today they are produced with the same ancient recipe. Be sure to try some “Pasticciotto Galatinese”! Enjoy a visit of Gallipoli. The city welcomes every visitor with the sculptures of Biblide, Dirce and Salmace scratched in the Greek fountain at the entrance of the old town. It connects to the mainland through a 20th century arch bridge. The walls, the ramparts and the towers, which once protected the city from invaders, today shelter it from the storms, giving it an old-time charm.
