Welcome to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania! Pick up your rental car at Hobart Airport. Spend the night at your hotel before embarking on your self-drive adventure.

Accommodation:

Day 2

place Hobart and Underground MONA Museum

Step out of your hotel to discover Hobart at your own pace. According to your wishes, we can advise you on visits to be made by yourself, or organized excursions. You can visit Hobart MONA (Museum of Old and New Art), Australia's largest private museum. The design is very contemporary but blends perfectly into the surrounding nature and most importantly, most of the MONA is underground! In this museum, the visitor is an actor. The MONA allows both young and old connoisseurs to discover contemporary art in many facets. It is located in the very north of Hobart. The most pleasant way to get there is to take a ferry from the city center. You will enjoy magnificent views over the whole bay of Hobart, and then over the MONA itself or rather over the hectares of vines and eucalyptus under which it is hidden. Keep your eyes open, find the door, and descend into the bowels of the building.

Accommodation:

  • double: Travelodge Hotel Hobart
Day 3

place Discover Port Arthur & Tasman Peninsula

Make your way to Port Arthur, heading southeast. You can have coffee in the small fishing port of Dunalley. Arrive at Port Arthur, a former prison colony, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The sandstone buildings of the prison and other ruins are well preserved. To reach Hobart, drive through the Tasman Arch dug by the sea, Tessallated Pavement then the "blowhole" which forms geysers due to the roaring forties wind. Leave for a 3-hour cruise on the Tasman Peninsula. Discover spectacular cliffs culminating at more than 300 meters above the ocean. You will often spot albatrosses and dolphins, and meet a colony of sea lions. Later, head for Freycinet National Park. This road offers beautiful views of Great Oyster Bay. In the afternoon, you can discover the peninsula of Freycinet with its impressive cliffs and superb white sandy beaches such as the famous Wineglass Bay.

Accommodation:

  • double: Bicheno by the Bay
Day 4

place Freycinet National Park

Spend a wonderful day outdoors while you discover Freycinet National Park today. It has a variety of attractions for nature lovers. Many hikes of different levels through the Hazard Mountains are possible to observe Wineglass Bay, one of the most beautiful white sandy beaches in the world. We can advise you on the different possibilities. You can also take a scenic flight over this beautiful coastline or go on a half-day cruise.

Accommodation:

  • double: Bicheno by the Bay
Day 5

place Launceston - Cradle Mountain

You have quite a long journey ahead as you will leave the East Coast to reach a Tasmanian must-see: The Cradle Mountain. On the way, you can discover the Cataract Gorge in Launceston, a superbly flowered park with century-old rhododendrons located about 1.5 km from the city center. You will then leave Launceston and head for the wilderness of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Cradle Mountain National Park. You can admire the rugged peaks of Cradle Mountain and the shimmering waters of Dove Lake.

Accommodation:

  • double: Cradle Mountain Hotel
Day 6

place Explore the Cradle Mountain

Spend the day at Cradle Mountain where you have the option to enjoy several kinds of activities. Many hikes for all levels and durations from 30 minutes to 8 hours are possible. You can also observe two species native to Australia – wombats and Tasmanian devils. Other options include a visit to the photo exhibition at the Wilderness Gallery, taking a canoe trip, or flying over the mountains by helicopter. We will provide you with a roadbook at the time of booking detailing all these activities, some of which we can book for you.

Accommodation:

  • double: Cradle Mountain Hotel
Day 7

place Journey to Strahan

Today, you can take another stroll in Cradle Mountain Park with many options for all levels. You will then head towards the West Coast to reach Strahan through mountainous landscapes with magnificent panoramas. You can explore the fascinating history of the silver mine at the West Coast Pioneers Memorial in the village of Zeehan and arrive at Strahan, a former fishing village on Macquarie Harbour.

Accommodation:

  • double: Strahan Village
Day 8

place Cruise on the Gordon River

This morning you will leave for a cruise on the Gordon River. First, you will discover Macquarie Harbour, a vast body of water six times the size of Sydney Harbour! You will then pass through a narrow bottleneck, a passage called "Hells Gate". This says a lot about the difficulties of access to Strahan in the past. Once you have crossed this obstacle, you will slip back into the calm waters of the Gordon River, which will allow you to explore the primary forest, classified as a World Heritage Site. There are famous Blackwoods. The atmosphere is very special, the water in places becomes a mirror. This phenomenon is linked to the fact that the tannin in the eucalyptus leaves colors the river with dark shades. You will then travel to Sarah Island, which was once a prison colony dedicated to building boats for the British colonies. Later, return to Strahan.

Accommodation:

  • double: Strahan Village
Day 9

place Lake St Clair & Mt Field National Park

Get off to an early start. Follow the Lyell Highway up to the Tasmanian highlands with their imposing landscapes. On the way, enjoy a short walk to Lake St Clair, which is Australia's deepest lake at 167 meters. Your next stop will be at Mt Field National Park. You can hike through the "giants" forest to access the foothills of the magnificent Russell Falls Waterfall. You have about an hour and a half by car to reach Hobart.

Accommodation:

  • double: Travelodge Hotel Hobart
Day 10

place Hobart Departure

Return your rental vehicle at Hobart airport. Carry on with your international flight.
