Day 5

place Weligama

In the morning drive towards the famous Dutch Fortress in Galle. EXPLORE – The Famous dutch fortress in Galle Galle is the prime example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. The Galle fort is a world heritage site and the largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Other prominent landmarks in Galle include the Natural Harbor, the National Maritime Museum, St. Mary’s Cathedral founded by Jesuit priests and the Clock Tower. En route stop over at a turtle hatchery and help with the recued sea turtles. You can even release a baby turtle and it will require an extra donation. EXPLORE – A Turtle Hatchery The hatchery pays fishermen for eggs collected at night along the long sandy beach. Although October to April is the main laying season, some eggs (mostly green turtles) can be found throughout the year. The hatchery buries the eggs in sand, and when they hatch around 50 days later the baby turtles are released into the sea at night. Only about one in 1,000 turtles survive to maturity. On completion watch the sunrise from the ramparts and finish with a delicious dinner (we recommend The Fort Printers restaurant located in the heart of the Fort, at the colonial building of a great architecture. The best lobster curry in Sri Lanka, stunning interiors, personal service and a great atmosphere) EXPLORE – The legendary hill of Rumassala, shrouded in myth and folklore
