Self Drive from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales
Today you will drive head north along Route 9 (away from Punta Arenas) to Puerto Natales. The road is paved all the way. You will be accompanied by beautiful views of Patagonia, you may well stop Nandues (Patagonian Rheas) and guanacos along the route. After 3 hours drive, you will arrive in Puerto Natales. The city lies between Cerro Dorotea and the eastern shore of the Seno Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope Sound). It is a bustling town of just under 20,000 inhabitants and owes its origins to the sheep farming estancias at the beginning of the 20th century but now is the tourism gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park and the surrounding area. During the afternoon you can do some optional excursions or just relax! A rancher feels and an ever-growing adventure activity scene are mixed in this city, which is the gateway to the famous Torres del Paine National Park. Climb the Dorotea Hill to look at Puerto Natales from above. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see the majestic flight of the condor that nests on the vertical walls of the hill. You’ll be pleasantly surprised with the countless activities to do outdoors and you’ll be amazed by the vibrant colors that paint the sky at sunset, which you’ll see from your kayak or bike.

Self Drive from Puerto Natales to Torres del Paine National Park
We recommend starting this journey around 9h00am. Head North out of Puerto Natales. At the crossing at Km 23 turn left and take the unpaved road (Y-290) towards the Park. A few Km after the turnoff you will drive past the Milodon Cave (it's worth stopping to visit). It is a very scenic collection of caves, the most famous of which is the Milodon cave where in 1895 the skin, bones, and other parts of a prehistoric sloth were found. The caves can be visited between 0830 and 2030 and the entrance fee is CLP 2,000 (approx. USD 3) per person. Paid on spot. The Rio Serrano administration entrance to the park is 122km/76 miles from Puerto Natales. Continue driving to the park crossing the bridge over the Serrano River to the National park entrance and administration center. You will need to pay your admission fee and comply with the formalities for visits inside the park.
