Officially the driest desert on the planet, Atacama is an all year-round destination. Summer days definitely get sizzling hot whilst nights keep a constant low temperature due to the altitudes. The Altiplanic winter consists of afternoon downpours with plenty of electrical storms. Sometimes heavy ra... Read More

Arrival at Calama Airport - San Pedro de Atacama (101 km / 63 mi) - Afternoon Moon Valley
Pick up your rental car at Calama Airport or downtown rental office. Once having arrived, you should go directly to the Car Rental Desk located at the arrival Hall. Complete the formalities: sign contract, credit card guarantee, check the vehicle. Start your journey through the spectacular northern ends of Chile. Your destination will be San Pedro de Atacama; once center to the Paleolithic culture. Impressive rock fortresses on steep mountains encircle the green valley, making it truly a unique and stunning sight to visit. It contrasts with the eerily silent desert landscape home to vast plains and salt ponds with octagonal-shaped crystals reflecting the towering volcanoes. In the afternoon, you can visit the intriguing Moon Valley boasting various stone and sand formations which have been carved over centuries by wind and water. It has an impressive range of color and texture, looking somewhat similar to the surface of the moon. Note: there is an information center where entrance fee payment must be is made. You will pay 2 admission fee. Paid on the spot.
Puritama Hot Springs - Atacama Salt Flat (approx. 162 km)
You will have a full day at leisure to explore its surroundings. Bring enough food and water for the excursions. In the morning, we recommend a visit to: Puritama Hot Springs, indigenous word for "hot water", are located in the heart of the Atacama desert, more than 19 miles (30 km) North of San Pedro de Atacama, and 11,398 ft. (3,475 m) above sea level. The Town Council of Atacama took over the administration of these baths years ago and is currently in charge of maintaining the area's facilities. The baths have modern services, apt for rest and for travelers who wish to enjoy nature in an overwhelming desert landscape. These waters are warm, refreshing, and revitalizing and flow up from the underground at temperatures near 91.4°F (33°C). Puritama Hot Springs are sulfuric and recommended for the relief of rheumatic illnesses and to combat stress and fatigue. In the afternoon, you can visit Salar de Atacama, the largest salt flat in Chile surrounded by mountains and dominated by large volcanoes and the Andes mountain range. It is located only about an hour away from San Pedro is the Los Flamencos National Reserve where some of the most remarkable arrays of wildlife exist. Home to the dark blue lagoons, flamingo flocks and many other bird species it is an ornithologist’s paradise. The Atacama Salt Flat is similarly a must see and highlight of the region. Note: there is an information center where entrance fee payment must be is made. You will pay 2 admission fee. Paid on the spot.

San Pedro de Atacama - Tatio Geysers & Machuca village (approx. 180 km / 112 mi)
You will have a full day at leisure to explore its surroundings. We recommend visiting Tatio Geysers & Machuca village. The night before please ask at the reception desk for your box breakfast. Bring enough food and water for the excursion. Before dawn break (around 5 :30am) you will depart from San Pedro and head north to the famous El Tatio Geysers; a geothermal field flanked by soaring peaks. El Tatio is situated at 4,300 meters above sea level on the Altiplano. You will find a lot of tourist vehicle heading the same direction. The route is well signposted. The first 20 minutes are on a sealed road and after that the road is unsealed but in good condition, a few potholes but we averaged 60 - 70 km/h so definitely not bad! It is the highest geothermal field in the world and boasts spectacular scenery. At dawn you will be able to observe powerful spurts of steam that shoot out from various geyser blowholes and steaming ponds. You have the oppotunity to enjoy “Pozon Rustic”the thermal waters provided by the mountain range. Note: there is an information center where entrance fee payment must be is made. You will pay 1 admission fee. Paid on the spot.
