Route to south-eastern Sicily
After breakfast, head to south-east and reach Ragusa. Immersed in a territory very rich in natural and architectural beauties to visit, this city rises on the Iblei Mountains and is located next to the river Irminio, whose mouth is part of a nature reserve. The Baroque architecture, which is distinguished by its whimsiness and the richness of decorative elements on vaults, columns, capitals and facades, is the most widespread artistic style in the Ragusa area. Visit of the stone garden of Noto and the Oasis of Vendicari
Today enjoy some free time in Noto. This is the famous 'stone garden', where the beauty lies in the figures sculpted on the balconies and statues, rather than in the flowers. The most famous example of this rich Baroque architecture, with which most of the towns in the Val di Noto were built after the disastrous earthquake of 1699, is undoubtedly Palazzo Nicolaci (open to visitors). A walk along the famous 'Corso' will let you discover other masterpieces such as the Cathedral and the Town Hall (open to visitors) or the theater. Visit an organic farm that produces oil and milk in the Val di Noto. The tour includes a walk in the fields with an explanation in English of what grows there and what's made with it: olive trees, almonds, citrus fruits, wild herbs. After this short walk of about 45min, the tasting will begin, with wines and products from the farm or from nearby companies. Relaxing day in Syracuse
Syracuse, once defined by Cicero as “the most beautiful city of Magna Graecia”, bears intact the signs of its history as a cultural capital, starting from the Greek age up to the Renaissance and Baroque period. Already frequented by Greek and Phoenician merchants since ancient times, Syracuse was founded in 734 BC. by Corinthian colonists and experienced a period of great political and cultural fortune like Athens and Alexandria. The city preserves evidence of its past in every corner. Greek, Roman, and Baroque styles come together in an irresistible scenario that tells millennia of history. Discovering Mount Etna!
Mount Etna is an active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, near the city of Catania. It is the highest active volcano in Europe and one of the most active in the world with almost a hundred eruptions during the 20th century. It is currently 3,357 m (11,014 ft) high. There are many options to discover the volcano. For example, you can take a simple walk on your own along the trails and craters that are accessible to everyone. Drive to Cefalù
After breakfast, head to the north coast of Sicily. Cefalù leans on a sheer cliff on the seaside offering breathtaking views of the shining Duomo against its rocky background. The city has preserved its ancient appearance, in the narrow streets with the medieval character of the center overlook palaces embellished with architectural decorations and many churches. Of particular charm is the seaside village, with the old houses overlooking the sea, and the long beach of fine sand, one of the most beautiful of the entire northern coast. Afterwards, continue your journey westwards and reach Monreale, a small town south to Palermo. The town is rich in history and has a great religious tradition that is expressed in its beautiful and characteristic churches. You will find remarkable traces of the dominations and families that have succeeded one another over the centuries along the main streets and in the historic buildings, many of which can be visited. Spend the last day of your trip discovering the capital of Sicily and the largest city on the island.
