Day 1: Arrive Johannesburg | Mon, 22 Mar
Arrive at O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg after your overnight flight from the United States. Your expert local representative will meet you in the arrivals hall and transfer you to Sandton, Johannesburg’s dynamic and cosmopolitan district.
This is an arrival-only day, giving you time to check in, unpack, adjust to the time difference, and settle into the start of your South Africa journey. If you feel like stretching your legs, Sandton City Mall and Nelson Mandela Square are a short walk away. Tomorrow, the journey begins in earnest.
O.R. Tambo International Airport is named after Oliver Reginald Tambo, a leading anti-apartheid figure and former president of the African National Congress.

Day 2: Apartheid Museum and Soweto | Tue, 23 Mar
Begin at the Apartheid Museum, one of the most powerful museums in the world. You enter through separate White and Non-White gates, an immediate reminder of how apartheid shaped daily life. Film, photography, artifacts, and immersive design trace the rise and fall of apartheid across seven decades.
In the afternoon, explore Soweto, the Southwestern Townships and South Africa’s most historically significant urban area. Visit the Hector Pieterson Museum, dedicated to the 13-year-old shot on June 16, 1976, then continue to Vilakazi Street, the only street in the world once home to two Nobel Peace Prize laureates: Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Visit the Nelson Mandela National Museum in Mandela’s former home, and Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, where the Freedom Charter was signed in 1955.
The Apartheid Museum opened in 2001 and is dedicated to 20th-century South Africa, with the apartheid story at its center.

Day 3: Constitution Hill and Pilanesberg | Wed, 24 Mar
After breakfast, visit Constitution Hill, a living museum and fully functioning court built on the site of the notorious Old Fort Prison. Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were both once held here, and the Constitutional Court uses bricks salvaged from the demolished Number Four Prison.
Late morning, depart northwest for the approximately 2-hour drive to Pilanesberg National Park, set in the crater of a 1,200-million-year-old volcano. In the late afternoon, join a sunset game drive during golden hour in the bush, with elephant, white rhino, giraffe, zebra, hippo, and the possibility of lion and leopard all within reach. Return for dinner under the stars.
Pilanesberg lies within one of the world’s largest and best-preserved alkaline ring dike complexes, a rare circular feature formed by an ancient volcano.

Day 4: Fly to Cape Town | Thu, 25 Mar
Rise early for a dawn game drive in Pilanesberg, when the cool morning hours show the bush in a different rhythm. Lions are often still active, birds are in full chorus, and the park begins waking to a new day. After the drive, return for a full breakfast and complete checkout.
Transfer to O.R. Tambo International Airport for your afternoon flight to Cape Town. Arrive at Cape Town International Airport in the afternoon, where your Cape Town guide will meet you and transfer you to the V&A Waterfront area. From there, Cape Town announces itself immediately, with views of Table Mountain, Cape Town Harbour, and Robben Island nearby.
The V&A Waterfront is named after Queen Victoria and her son Prince Alfred, who began Cape Town harbor breakwater construction in 1860.

Day 5: Table Mountain and Jazz | Fri, 26 Mar
After breakfast, ride the state-of-the-art rotating cable car to Table Mountain’s 1,086-meter summit, weather permitting. The cable car completes a full 360-degree rotation during the ascent, giving you sweeping views across Cape Town, the Atlantic Seaboard, Robben Island, and the Peninsula.
Enjoy short, well-marked walks along the plateau, surrounded by the extraordinary fynbos ecosystem, a floral kingdom found nowhere else on Earth. The afternoon is free to explore the V&A Waterfront. This evening, attend Night 1 of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival at the CTICC, Africa’s premier jazz event, with world-class South African and international artists performing across multiple stages simultaneously. Your premium admission gives you full access to all stages throughout the evening, and transport to and from the festival is included.
Table Mountain National Park forms part of the Cape Floral Kingdom World Heritage Site, and its vegetation is largely fynbos, a fire-adapted shrubland unique to the Cape Floral Region.

Day 6: Robben Island and Jazz | Sat, 27 Mar
After breakfast, take the ferry from the V&A Waterfront to Robben Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the former prison where Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of incarceration. The 3.5-hour tour includes two return ferry crossings and a guided visit to the Maximum-Security Prison led by a former political prisoner.
Continue with a bus tour of the island, including the blue slate quarry where Mandela worked and the Muslim shrine, then return to the Waterfront by early afternoon. This evening, attend Night 2 of the Cape Town International Jazz Festival. With the layout already familiar, use your premium admission to move between artists with ease and savor the event. Transport is included.
Robben Island was used at different times between the 17th and 20th centuries as a prison, a hospital for socially isolated groups, and a military base.

Day 7: Coast and Penguins | Sun, 28 Mar
Start with a deliberately relaxed morning after two festival nights, with time to sleep in, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, and move at an easy pace. Late morning, depart south on a scenic coastal drive along the magnificent False Bay coastline toward Kalk Bay.
Browse the colorful fishing harbor village of Kalk Bay, known here for its antique shops, art galleries, and charming independent cafés. Continue to Simon’s Town, a beautifully preserved Victorian naval town, for lunch at leisure at one of the harborside restaurants. A short distance away, visit Boulders Beach, home to a thriving colony of African penguins among granite boulders. Walk the boardwalks for close-range viewing, then return to the V&A Waterfront by late afternoon for a final evening at leisure.
Boulders Penguin Colony in Simon’s Town is part of Table Mountain National Park and is home to an endangered land-based colony of African penguins.

Day 8: Depart Cape Town | Mon, 29 Mar
After a final leisurely breakfast, complete checkout and allow a moment to take in one last view of Table Mountain from the Waterfront. Your private vehicle and guide will transfer you to Cape Town International Airport in comfortable time for your international departure.
As the journey closes, reflect on the streets of Soweto, the silence of Pilanesberg at dawn, the profound stillness of Robben Island, and the extraordinary energy of the Cape Town Jazz Festival. We hope these experiences leave you with lasting impressions and a deeper love for this remarkable country. Hamba kahle.
Hamba kahle is a South African farewell phrase from Xhosa meaning “go well.”
