From an old Moorish outpost to a bustling metropolitan city, Madrid’s history has much to offer. Start your journey by heading to the Opera House of Madrid. Also known as the ‘Teatro Real’, this is where performances have taken place for commoners and royalty alike for many years. From here, you’ll walk around to the back, where you’ll find yourself in lush green gardens, with the Royal Palace looming above. This plaza is known to be full of madrileños enjoying the nice weather and street performers, as they have a café con leche on one of the many terraces nearby. Constructed on the site of the old Alcázar fortress, a former Moorish castle, the area has been used since the 16th century as the site of the royal court. It is the official residence of the Spanish Royal Family, used for state ceremonies, but the family actually lives in the Palace of Zarzuela on the outskirts of Madrid. Enjoy your time wandering around the Royal Palace, taking in the stately marble, the magnificent tapestries, the ancient kitchens, and the elegant trimmings that make up the official home of the royals. After visiting the Almudena Cathedral, you will arrive at the majestic Plaza Mayor. This is the very heart of Madrid, where major gatherings have taken place for centuries. Finally, you will head to the Puerta del Sol, where Madrid holds its annual New Year’s Eve celebration and where you’ll find the center of all the major highways in Spain. It was built on the site of an ancient mosque and today is the third-largest cathedral in the world, housing the tomb of Christopher Columbus. You’ll also get to see Plaza de España, built in 1928 for the Ibero-American Exposition of 1929 and used in several films since then. The plaza has row boats for rent in the moat that flows through the square and is lined with horse carriages that head back to the city center. Just in front of Plaza España, you’ll find the Maria Luisa Park, a lush green area of Sevilla.
