Arrival Day
Arrival at the Colombo International Airport. Clients will be met by our National Tour Guide and Airport Staff and proceed to Kalpitiya. Rich in natural beauty, Kalpitiya's history is no less interesting. Records going far back reveal that the peninsula was associated with maritime trade and smuggling escapades since ancient times. It was first colonized by the Portuguese in early 17th Century. The arrival of the Dutch eventually resulted in the ousting of the Portuguese from here and elsewhere in the island. Historical records show that during the Dutch period of the island's colonial history, the northern end of the peninsula was used as a strategic base for a military garrison and naval outpost to monopolize trade supplies to the mainland. A well preserved Dutch era fort (incorporating an earlier Portuguese-era church) occupied by the Sri Lanka Navy, and a Dutch church remain today. Nearby at Talawila to the south, a vibrant annual festival keeps alive its Portuguese heritage, at the ancient St Anne's church festival, when thousands of Catholic devotees descend upon the tiny village to celebrate St Anne's Day on July 26. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Visits to the Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Polonnaruwa Ancient City
Breakfast at the hotel and visit Sigiriya rock Fortress. SIGIRIYA - After breakfast leave for Sigiriya Rock Fortress. King Kashyapa built his fortified palace atop and around a 183 m rocky outcrop in the 5th century. Sigiriya is best known today for the paintings of beautiful women found on a sheltered ledge on the side of the rock. These are considered as being part of the world’s art treasures. On the summit are the remains of the vast palace of Kashyapa, complete with bathing pool and platforms for dancing girls. Recommendation: This is a walking tour. Wear comfortable shoes and hat/ cap. Sun lotion etc.… Leave for Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital of Sri Lanka. POLONNARUWA - this medieval city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, rose to fame as the capital (10th - 12th century AD) after the decline of Anuradhapura. The entire landscape of the region is punctuated by huge man-made reservoirs, the most famous of which is the Parakrama Samudra or the Sea of Parakrama, larger in size than the Colombo harbour. The monuments are relatively well preserved and give clear evidence of the glory of Sri Lanka's past. Highlights are the Royal Palace complex including the Kings Palace and Audience Hall, the Quadrangle with its concentration of ancient heritage and the spectacular Gal Vihare complex of four massive images of the Buddha, cut from a single slab of granite - a highlight of ancient Sri Lankan rock carving. Some of the best examples of the Hindu influence - the Temples of Shiva, intricate statues of Hindu Gods, fascinating Buddhist temples, the Lankatileka and Watadage, the Galpotha, the Lotus bath, the Kiri Vihare Dagoba and the remains of a former Temple of the Tooth are other impressive sights.
