Located 26km north of Puttalam and 30km west of the sacred city of Anuradhapura is connected to history, as inside the forest itself there are many archeological sites. The special feature in this Park is the large number of Villus (lakes) where you can watch wildlife and many species of birds refreshing themselves. Villus are natural sand rimmed water basins of depressions that fill with rainwater which adds to the uniqueness of this park. Leopards were the most famous animal in this Park and is also famous for its Wild Elephant herds. Spotted Deer, Sambhur, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Wild Buffalo, sloth Bear, Mongoose, Crocodile and Peacocks are few from many other dwellers in here. Thereafter check-in to your hotel and at leisure.

place Visit Aukana Buddha Statue

After an early breakfast, you may proceed to visit the famous Aukana Buddha Statue. Undoubtedly, the most magnificent undamaged ancient image in the island. This 5th Century statue, ascribed to King Dhatusena, is 46 feet high, standing in an image house of which remains could be seen. This is the most beautiful Rock-cut standing Buddha Statue in the Island, if not the entire world. Thereafter, proceed on a game drive at Kalawewa National Park / Hurulu National Park (depending on the season). Declared recently as a National park in the year 2015, Kalawawa became more popular in the year 2019. Perfectly hidden in a 6000-hectare forest are giant tusker elephants, towering Kumbuk trees, and a 45 ft. statue dating back to the 5th century adding a mysterious heritage glamour and value to this park. During the season, reservoir attracts lots of thirsty elephants who reside in nearby vegetation. The visitors who are very much intrigued, can arrange safaris only when the water levels are declined, therefore the best time to visit will be June to July. However, this could vary depending on unpredictable weather patterns in the country. The park is also home to many birds and makes it a good place to do birdwatching as well. Proceed to your stay in Habarana.

In Sri Lanka’s eastern region lies Gal Oya National Park, a stunning mountainous wilderness that is also home to the iconic Gal Oya Dam, the largest reservoir in the country. This vast body of water is a spectacular feature of the region and yet it still remains off the radar as a tourist attraction, despite its captivating beauty. Gal Oya is known for its elephant herds that can be seen throughout the year, so keep your eyes peeled. Crocodiles can also be spotted lazing along the banks and sliding silently into the water. And all around are the sounds of the echoing forest, home to exotic birds, monkeys and other curious creatures. An experience unique to this park is to take a boat ride across the splendid reservoir as the sun goes down and look out for elephants swimming between the small islands which are dotted across the lake, as well as numerous migrant and endemic birds.

GALLE – said to be the famous Tarshish of the Bible where King Solomon obtained gems and spices, this “Living” UNESCO World Heritage Site is the port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka in 1505. Captured and fortified by the Dutch who ruled maritime Sri Lanka in the 17th and 18th centuries, the city still retains the air of old Holland. Within the well preserved 90 acre fort and ramparts built in 1663 are old Dutch churches and monuments with armorial bearings, an imposing crested and monogrammed gateway dated 1669, many well preserved old Dutch houses and narrow alleys still bearing Dutch names. The New Oriental Hotel, built for a Dutch governor in 1684, a colonial gem now converted to the internationally renowned Amangalle Hotel and several other excellent boutique hotels are testimony to the importance of this location.
