Day 1

place Journey to Oshima Island

Leave the port in Tokyo on the jetfoil ferry bound for Oshima Island, where you will meet your guide and head to the start of the Mt. Mihara trekking route via private car. Mt. Mihara has an interesting reputation to it, with the local residents of Oshima referring to it as the “god of fire”, as well as it becoming the site where the Japanese government imprisoned Godzilla in the film adaptation. Being an active volcano, the trek will provide a unique landscape in which to explore, with your local guide explaining the thermal and geological significance of the area to you along the way. After the hike, head to Hamanoyu where you can rest your body in the hot spring whilst enjoying the beautiful views over the sea. From here, you will head to your accommodation. As a recommended dinner option, try out the local-style sushi called “bekko sushi”, where the fish has been marinated in a chilli pepper soy sauce to give it a beautiful amber colour.

Day 2

place Hajikama Shrine, Fishing Villages, & The Smallest Shochu Brewery in Japan

Start your second day with an energetic taiko drumming lesson! Each beat represents the eruption of the mountain and the technique is developed specific to Oshima Island. After the lesson, you can explore other parts of the island depending on the time. Visit Hajikama Shrine, a small shrine located within a stunning forest and steeped in a mystical legend of a dragon and princes. Step back in time with a leisurely stroll through the narrow streets of Habu Port, a nostalgic fishing village in the southern part of the island and home to many past painters and writers. Visit the smallest shochu liquor brewery in Japan at Gojinka, which has been running since 1937, and now manned solely by its owner Hidehisa Taniguchi. As a dinner option, try out a BBQ at your accommodation or visit a local izakaya restaurant.

Meals: Breakfast
