Day 1

place Welcome to Costa Rica!

Welcome to Costa Rica: welcome by your English-speaking guide at the airport and transfer to your hotel. Your stay begins with a first night in San Jose. Located at an altitude of 1,200 meters, the capital and its urban area are home to half of the country's population. The city is located in the heart of the central valley surrounded in the north by various volcanoes, such as the Poas, Irazú or Turrialba, and in the south by the Talamanca mountain range, which is the highest mountain range in southern Central America.

Guide: Included for the day

Accommodation:

  • High-end Accommodation: Hotel Aranjuez
Day 2

place Transfer to Turrialba & Relax in Turrialba nature

Today you will take a shared shuttle to go to one of the most peaceful destinations of Costa Rica: Turrialba. Prized for its fauna and flora, Turrialba is one of the essentials to visit for the nature lovers! Turrialba is in the center of the country where volcanos Turrialba and Irazu are meeting as twins, since they are set on the same base. This volcanic area offers a wide and dense nature with a rich soil, beneficial for plants. Once you arrive, you can check in to your hotel, rest at the SPA of the hotel and enjoy the nature surrounding you.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation:

  • High-end Accommodation: Casa Turire
Day 3

After your breakfast at your hotel, you can go explore the area, visit Turrialba Volcano National Park, a family owned coffee plantation or go on an adventure like rafting, canyoning or zip-lining.

Day 4

place Transfer to La Fortuna

Today your Costa Rican adventure takes you north to reach La Fortuna, a city located at the foot of the Arenal volcano. Costa Rica is known to host about 116 volcanoes, among which (and probably the most impressive) is the Arenal volcano. Despite its 7,500 years, it is fairly well-preserved since it is in fact the youngest volcano in the country. Rising to 1,630 meters, this stratovolcano has not been active since the end of 2010, but it is a delight for photographers (when it is exposed on clear days) as well as for aficionados of thermal waters.

Meals: Breakfast

Accommodation:

  • High-end Accommodation: Hotel Lomas del Volcan
Day 5

place Arenal hanging bridges & optional activities

This morning you will embark on a walk on hanging bridges (activity included with an English-speaking guide and transfers). This tour is in the 250Ha natural private reserve of primary tropical rainforest and allows for prime observation of the fauna and flora in the canopy as well as various viewpoints onto the volcano. The walk consists of 3 km of easy trails, accessible to all. You will cross 15 bridges at different heights ranging from 5 to 100 meters. Before the suspension bridges, we recommend that you explore by yourself the Arenal Volcano National Park (park entrance $15 per person – activity not included). Take a walk along the paths of the National Park, characterized by its different stages of rainforest regeneration. On your walk, you will encounter the mythical kapok tree, famous due to its towering height, this immense tree was considered by the natives to be the staircase to the heaven. You will walk up an old lava flow to observe the panorama it offers on one side onto the Arenal Volcano and on the other side onto the Arenal lake that provides 20% of the country's electricity. With your tickets from the entrance to Arenal National Park, you can then go 3 km from the entrance to the park to the "Peninsula sector" trail, which is a 2-hour walk (round trip) allowing you to explore the tropical forest with different viewpoints offering stunning views of the lake. There is also an observation tower which offers a unique panorama for photos with the lake and the Arenal volcano as a backdrop. There are many optional activities that are of interest in the area that you can add for today's itinerary, such as: Arenal National Park, Zip lining, Sloth watching tour, Bird watching, Outing on Arenal Lake by kayak or paddle, Cayonning, Chocolate tour, cooking lessons, Farming Experience, The Arenal from the Sky, Relaxation in the thermal waters of the region, La Fortuna Waterfall, Salsa dancing and cooking classes, and much more!

Your shared shuttle will pick you up at your hotel for a ground transfer towards the dam of Lake Arenal. There, you will board a boat that will sail across the lake to your next destination. During the ride, you will get the opportunity to have a stunning last view of this magnificent volcano. Then, you will head to Monteverde by ground transfer. Monteverde was founded in the middle of the 20th century by American Quakers who immigrated during the Vietnam War because they shared Costa Rica's pacifist values. It is a cloud forest nestled at an altitude of 1,400 metres and is a small paradise for nature lovers with an extraordinary diversity of flora. Transport: 3 hours in total

Monteverde offers a wide range of activities whatever you are interested in, from simple relaxation to participation in more active leisure activities. Among the quieter activities, we recommend you explore one of the many reserves of Monteverde such as the Monteverde Biological Reserve, the Santa Elena Cloud Reserve or the Eternal Forest for Children. The latter exists thanks to the support of children and adults from all over the world who have taken part in the movement called BEN. This fundraising campaign began in Sweden and the United States in 1987, then extended all over the world. Today already 44 countries have participated in the conservation and protection of these lands. There are about 60 species of amphibians, 101 reptiles, 425 birds and 121 mammal species, representing 50.5% of the total terrestrial vertebrate species in Costa Rica. It also protects the habitat of the jaguar as well as a variety of important birds, fauna, trees, orchids, bromeliads, insects, reptiles and of course unique examples of the amphibians of the county. Also, you could plan on discovering the Monteverde suspension bridges during your day or for more thrills, zip line on the largest cable in Latin America.
