Explore the coastline south of Lima
Today we start the adventure in the Toyota Runner 4x4. We pick you up at the hotel and head to Paracas. On the way, we first stop in Pachacamac, a sacred ancient and ceremonial site, where thousands of pilgrims converged to pay tribute and consult the Pachacamac oracle, who they believed could see the past, the future and fate. The site comprises the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of Pachacamac, and the Acllahuasi or Palace of the Inca Virgins of the Sun. Then, we stop in the little Pucusana fishing port, a bay with sandy beaches and a traditional fishing port from where we start our adventure in a wooden boat and try to fish as much as we can. Its calm waters make Pucusana perfect for swimming and amateur diving. While fishing we may be able to see birds, sea lions and dolphins. After one hour, we return to the dock and head to Paracas for 2.5 hours. Upon arrival we check in at the hotel.

Refugio Amazonas Lodge
We travel for ten minutes to the Puerto Maldonado headquarters. While enjoying your first taste of the forest in the gardens, they ask you to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest at their safe deposit. This helps them keep the boats and cargo light. Skirting Puerto Maldonado, they drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. The port is a communal business. The boat ride from the Tambopata Port to the Refugio Amazonas lodge takes us past the Community of Infierno and the Tambopata National Reserve´s checkpoint and into the buffer zone of this 1.3-million-hectare conservation unit. Upon arrival, the lodge manager welcomes you and briefs you with important navigation and security tips. You have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but difficult to see. Easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories. The car returns to Lima today.

Tambopata Research Center
Four and a half hours by boat from the lodge, in the pristine heart of the reserve, lies the Tambopata Research Center. One and a half hours into our boat journey, as we cross the confluence with the Malinowski River, we leave behind the final traces of human habitation. Within the 700,000-hectare, uninhabited nucleus of the reserve, sightings of capybara, caiman, geese, macaws and other large species will become more frequent. Two hours away from Refugio Amazonas, deep in the Tambopata National Reserve, we stop at the Chuncho clay lick. After a short walk (5 minutes), we have the chance to see dozens of large macaws feeding on the special sodium-rich clays of the riverbank. The Chuncho clay lick probably attracts more large macaws than any other clay lick in the world and the sight of dozens of macaws taking flight is truly unforgettable. The details of our stopover depend on the weather and the amount of macaw activity, as the birds do not visit the clay lick when it is raining. Upon arrival, the lodge manager welcomes you and briefs you with important navigation and security tips. A three-to-five-kilometer hike leads us to commanding magnificent views of the Tambopata, winding its way into the lowlands. The forest on this trail, regenerating on old bamboo forest, is good for howler monkeys and dusky Titi monkeys. After dinner, scientists provide an in-depth look at the biology of macaws, their feeding habits, the theories for clay lick use, their breeding and feeding ecology, population fluctuations and the threats to their conservation.

Tambopata Research Center
On most clear mornings of the year, dozens of large macaws and hundreds of parrots congregate on this large river bank in a raucous and colorful spectacle which inspired a National Geographic cover story. Discretely located fifty meters off the cliff, we observe green-winged, scarlet and blue-and-gold macaws and several species of smaller parrots descending to ingest clay. Outings are at dawn when the lick is most active. This five-kilometer trail covers the prototypical rain forest with immense trees crisscrossed by creeks and ponds. Amongst the figs, ceibas and shihuahuacos, we look for squirrels, brown capuchins, and spider monkeys as well as peccaries. Tambopata Research Center is located within this habitat. Ten minutes upriver from the lodge is a tiny pond with a platform in the middle. It is a great place to spot waterfowl such as Muscovy ducks and hoatzins along with the woodpeckers, oropendolas, flycatchers and parakeets that call this pond their home. You have the option of hiking out at night, when most of the mammals are active but rarely seen. Much easier to find are frogs with shapes and sounds as bizarre as their natural histories
