Day 1

place Welcome to Mongolia

Enjoy a stress free airport transfer and hotel check-in with us. Meet after lunch for your half-day guided cycling tour. Explore the city by bike, winding through modern skyscrapers and historic temples. This is a great way to see the lively city from a local’s point of view, without being stuck in the notorious traffic. Finish at Zaisan Hill, a historic monument and viewpoint overlooking the colourful city. Here you’ll meet us for a welcome dinner at our favourite Mongolian restaurant, where you can ask us any questions in person.

Day 2

place Terelj National Park

Early morning transfer to Terelj National Park. Travel through steppe and valleys dotted with picture-perfect traditional ger, grazing horses and yaks. Visit the majestic Turtle Rock and Aryabal Meditation Temple for a peaceful walk up into the mountain, as a gentle warm up before the trek. Find your fortune on the buddhist path and marvel at the spectacular view over the National Park. Head deeper into the protected zone, crossing the river and winding between the mountains. This landscape is similar to the Northern Mongolian “Taiga” and is rich in flora and fauna. Meet our local horse wrangler and support team, load up the pack horses and mount up. Start the horse trek with a gentle ride to get further into the National Park. Get to know your horses on a slow open path before picking up the pace.

place Horse Trek

Start your three day horse trek into the remote and wild mountains. Set out early as these next two days will be a challenging ride through the Khavirga Mountain Pass. This route can sometimes be boggy and muddy. Follow the pack horses for the best route. After a short time you will start to go up into the Altan Ulgii Mountain, which marks the border into the Khan Khentii Protected Zone. Away from nomads and herd animals, the scenery here looks much wilder. You are sure to see much wildlife, and maybe even catch a glimpse of a wolf! Hike Altan Ulgii mountain for breathtaking views. Overnight camping in shared tents or homestay with a nomadic family.

place Continue Horse Trekking

Today circle back and horse trek down through forest and steppe, crossing rivers and wild flower meadows. You will explore forest and mountain trails that are little travelled. Ride through beautiful mountains, muddy trails, forests and green meadows, with no one else around, only animals and birds. Today you may see red deer, moose, gazelle and it’s possible to come across bear and wild boar tracks. Overnight camping in tents or homestay with a nomadic family.

Day 6

place Kayaking

Descend towards where two rivers meet. Open steppe awaits, giving opportunities for galloping and a chance to enjoy a grand vista! Say goodbye to your trusty horses as after lunch the kayaking adventure begins. Speed downstream through the forest, watching horses come to the river to drink. Navigate the river until you come in sight of the legendary Tsonjin Boldog valley. The tale goes that Chinggis Khan, whilst riding to battle across the steppe, found a golden whip on the ground. This was a portentous sign and he rode on to victory. The 40m tall Chinggis Khan Equestrian Statue now dominates the steppe, built in honour of the 13th century leader. Tandem paraglide over the valley and glide above the towering statue for the best birds eye view (weather permitting). Time to relax this evening. Perhaps enjoy a drink in the well stocked bar.

Day 7

place Travel back to the 13th Century

Visit the 13th Century Complex, a living museum to witness the intriguing way of life during the Mongol Empire. Here visit the Kings Camp, Craft Camp and even a 13th century style mobile library. The residents live with no electricity or modern conveniences year round, just as the people did in the 13th century. The backdrop to this fascinating relic is equally impressive, with a scattering of magma plumes over the steppe, making the scenery unearthly and well worth a few photos. Kayak or raft again through the mountains, leaving the open steppe behind. Enjoy the freedom, fresh air and beautiful scenery. Arrive back into Ulaanbaatar in time for dinner. Join us at one of our favourite restaurants for a farewell dinner.
