Kayak to Dugong Beach Camp
Shute Harbor to Dugong Beach camp Kayak - 12 km, Hike - 5 km return Paddling directly from Shute Harbour, we kayak over fringing coral reefs and explore the mangrove lined inner islands. Stopping off at White Rock, there is an opportunity to swim and explore, before heading across the Molle Passage towards Denman Island. These turquoise waters and islands are home to an amazing diversity of marine and bird-life including sea turtles and soaring eagles. Between July and September, there is also a chance to encounter the magnificent humpback whales which arrive to give birth before returning to the Antarctic. After a short break, paddlers cross the Whitsunday Passage, (approximately 2 hours paddling) and arrive at Dugong Beach. There is time to relax, while the guides set up a tropical beach-based buffet lunch. During the afternoon, we head along the Dugong Sawmill Track, which is an easy 1.5 km walk through coastal vine forest. Next, is the challenging Whitsunday Peak track. It is 5km to the peak and is graded as difficult. Despite its short length, this track is deceptive. The initial climb is beside the creek bed, the stone steps lead through dry vine forest before reaching lush green 'cloud forest'. This steep track reaches an elevation of 437 m and offers spectacular views over the Whitsunday islands and surrounding mainland. Heading back to Dugong Beach, we set up camp, then take the time to enjoy our dinner overlooking the sunset across the Whitsunday Islands.

Additional paddling in Macona Inlet is an option, if conditions allow. In the afternoon, the Whitsunday Cairn Peak Walk is also an option. This 4km track leads through forest to a ridge covered in giant grass trees, which attract the blue tiger butterflies. The climb ends up 300m above sea level to an open rocky expanse with panoramic views across Hook Island and out to Border and Dumbell Islands.
