Arrive in Tromsø, continue to Sommarøy
Welcome to Sommarøy!
After collecting your luggage, go to pick up your rental car. It is time to start your scenic Northern Norway road trip.
The drive from the airport to Sommarøy takes just over 1h. It is recommended to take your time and not rush, especially in wintertime when it is snow.
Sommarøy is located in the western part of Tromsø Municipality. This charming fishing village is known for its white sandy beaches, midnight sun in the summer and the Northern lights in the winter.
Sommarøy consists of the "Store Sommarøy" island as well as smaller neighbouring islands like Hillesøy.
It was at Hillesøy the original settlement of Sommarøy started and where the old middle-age church was located.
In the 1800s the church was moved to the Island of Kalvøya and the population was spreading.
Sommarøy is the perfect destination for relaxing and enjoying the beach, exploring nature and meeting the locals.
It is a small community with just over 300 inhabitants.
Guided sea kayaking and Northen light park
After breakfast it is time to go to the Sommarøy adventure office.
You will spend the day together with a small group and your guide, paddling in the Arctic ocean.
Kayaking in the winter is actually warmer than you might think! And it is also the best time to do it!
During the winter months the water below you will be crystal clear and in the dark season, you will have stars shining above you all day. The air is crisp and clean.
Together with your guide you will get an introduction to kayaking and gear up in dry suits to keep warm while on the ocean. During the winter animals both over and below the ocean come to these areas for food. You will spot for Eiders, White tailed sea eagles, otters and every now and then some curious seals pops out and follow the kayaks for a while.
Half way through the trip, you will find a white secluded beach to explore and have snack and hot drinks.
Well back on land you will have time to relax and get the heat back before the evening when you will go to the Northern light centre.
The northern light park is located within a 20 min walk from your hotel.
Transportation is also an option if you prefer this.
Halvar is the creator of this park that you find gently placed in a great location to see the lights.
The park is built by recyclable materials that Halvar collected from the old school building and other buildings around the island. While you wait for the lights to appear, you will be served warm drinks and snacks.
Halvar is also happy to share the story about the construction and history from the island.
When you feel ready, return to your accommodation by foot or transport.
